Empower Millions with Your Skills
Did you know 95% of rare diseases do not have a treatment? That means over 50 million people in the US and Europe alone have no treatment. And 70% of rare diseases affect children, of whom 50% will die before they reach adulthood.
Are you looking to use your programming capabilities to help people with rare diseases find hope? Come join us and give some of your precious time and skills to give life and solutions for people with rare diseases?

CheckOrphan, a nonprofit news and information platform dedicated to rare diseases, is looking to add 2-3 more volunteers to its web development team. CheckOrphan’s website is designed to be a one-stop source for information about all rare diseases to empower patients or their caregivers with:
- Access to specialists for their rare disease
- Latest new and events
- Information about possible treatments
- Access to clinical trials
- Databases of research
CheckOrphan – Empower the Masses
The goal of providing a one-stop place with CheckOrphan is to empower people with as much information as possible to find a solution or create a better future. Almost every rare disease could have its own Hollywood movie, such as with Extraordinary Measures which is the based on a true story of a treatment for pompe disease, or the Acadamy Award winning, Lorenzo’s Oil, for adrenoleukodystrophy, where two parents who were economists do everything in their power to learn about biology, chemistry and medicine and become advocates and physicians to find a treatment for their son.
Your Commitment
As part of the team, you will work on leading the development of both front-end and back-end projects. It is highly preferred if you have experience with WordPress, PHP, theme development, plugin development, API integration, or app planning and development, and MySQL, which the current site uses. PHP/Python and other scripting experience is a plus.
You will need experience of checking in and checking out code into a repository.
We ask that you be willing to dedicate 2-4 hours weekly to further building out CheckOrphan and accomplish its mission of empowering millions living with a rare disease to drive change.
Your Benefits
Besides helping to empower millions, you and the team will build a page within CheckOrphan that presents your role(s) within the development team and your skills.
